The Village of South Rockwood is a local government office in Berlin Charter Township, on the southeast side Michigan.
The SituationThe Village wanted to improve communication with their community through the integration of an LED Sign. The best place for the new LED Sign was in front of their municipal building that is also shared with their local library.

Shirley Vangeloff, owner of Vangeloff Management and an active member of AKFCF (Association of KFC Franchisees), is in charge of 17 KFC franchise locations in the metro Detroit area.
The SituationVangeloff Management is in the process of remodeling its restaurants, consistent with corporate KFC directives. They wanted new signage to reflect their new and improved dining and menu experience, that would better attract customers while increasing both unit sales, as well as revenue per sale.

They were looking to revamp their image, and a better way to showcase their new menu, advertise daily specials, and promote upcoming events/live music that they host on the weekends. At the time, their only way of doing so was to climb a ladder and individually insert each letter to the back lit, changeable sign that was out front.

With the Dow center hosting many events, they want to make sure that their customers feel safe entering, and exiting the event they are attending. They started receiving complaints about the parking lot lighting levels, so they started looking into options on how to improve the lighting as well as save on energy as well.
Electro-Matic came in to do a light survey in the parking lot, and the results were the below the foot candle and IES standard. Their current lighting was outdated, and the poles were placed very far apart. The Dow Event Center, SMG and Electro-Matic needed to work together to increase the light levels and decrease the energy usage and obtain safe entrance for customers attending events.
Next Steps:
Electro-Matic had to design, a lighting system using various optic controls to spread the light and reach the IES standards. A photometric design was created and presented to both Saginaw County and the Dow event Center. Once the drawing was approved, the lights were manufactured, permits were pulled and the lights where installed.
Outcome:
The Dow Event Center increased the Foot Candle levels by a third and decreased their energy by two-thirds and the customers now have safe light to attend events. A season ticket holder of the Saginaw Spirt hockey team, was more than impressed with the improvement: “As a season ticket holder, I have never felt safer entering the arena to watch a hockey game with my kids’.

Not only is Harvest Barn Church going to benefit financially from the future years of energy savings, but they also experienced an outstanding rebate incentive from Michigan Saves and Consumers Energy by switching to LED lighting. Their rebates totaled to be approximately $15,000. Harvest Barn Church may use their rebate money to continue to improve their Church by adding an LED sign in the near future.
